NOW Strikes Stupid Again

I have had a bias against NOW (The National Organization for Women) for quite some time.  My past experiences in dealing with those who call themselves NOW members are sometimes very painful memories.  The stories regarding this group that come out in mainstream media usually portray them as selfish, arrogant and ignorant hypocrites.  I believe most people who know me would agree that I am not any sort of chauvinist and I strongly support women and the equal rights which they deserve.  But the organization NOW continues to make pointless arguments that are so one-sided that they lose all credibility.

The latest news regarding NOW is the David Letterman story that broke a few weeks ago.  David Letterman was allegedly extorted over past relationships he had with co-workers while in a serious, monogamous relationship with someone else.  Nobody is disputing the facts of the case except for the suspect in the extortion case and his legal representation.  Before Letterman married Regina Lasko, he had physical relationships with other women.  Even though he was in a long-term relationship with Lasko and had a child with her during this time.  I do find Letterman's actions of cheating on his significant other deplorable.  He supposedly loved this woman and cared for her, but then he cheated behind her back and lied about it for years.  If the women he had a relationship with during this time knew about his commitment to Lasko, which they probably did, then these women also made a bad decision and should be ashamed of themselves for getting involved with someone under those circumstances.  The gender of each person does not matter in this case.  If you cheat on someone, or if you are with someone who is cheating and you know about, you are making a terrible mistake.

Then NOW has to blow up the issue with a bunch of unrelated nonsense.  The organization has proclaimed in public that David Letterman has created a hostile work environment and is helping to objectify woman.  I would like to know how they figure that one.  There is absolutely no evidence that Letterman pressured these women.  By all accounts these women were willing accomplices in Letterman's adultery.  According to a released statement from the executive producer of the show, not one single complaint has been brought against Letterman from any employee before or after this story went public.  In fact, current and past employees have gone on record to say working there is a fair and comfortable environment.  Both men and women are saying Letterman helps maintain a merit-based and professional workplace.  Snidely, NOW continues their untruthful accusations by asserting that there are not enough women in positions of power in CBS.  Once again, the current producer of the show is reporting the facts that there have been more female executive producers than males, more female employees than males and there is no indication of gender-discrimination in hiring or promotion practices.

NOW is getting involved in something that is not an issue relating to them or much of an issue at all.  If the organization wants to condemn Letterman for cheating on someone that is at least fair.  Of course NOW would have a lot to discuss about all of the celebrity males and females who have been reported to be unfaithful.  Although that would mean NOW would have to be fair and equitable and reasonable which are traits the group does not exhibit too often.  Letterman did no wrong to his fellow colleagues and absolutely committed no crime against women.  An organization that claims to fight for equality is publicly attacking a victim of a criminal offense.  The man messed up so bad he can never sufficiently apologize to his wife but he does not owe any other person or group a thing.  Would NOW be voicing their concerns to the world if a famous female was involved with someone at her workplace?  I somehow tend to doubt it.  So much for equality.
